10 Small Business DIY ideas for creatives

Small businesses are a great way to make some extra cash on the side. Especially in todays world where there are tons of ways to sell your homemade goods, it's a great way to make money.

There are some expensive arts and crafts, but there are also some that are not so expensive & those are the ones I'm going to be sharing. So if that's you, then keep reading!

1. T-shirts

T-shirts are a classic way to start making money at home. However, t-shirts do take time to create and they also take a lot of money at the start. You will need to get something to print the t-shirts and the products to print on them.

This idea though is for the not-as-creative type. You are able to create items to sell without having to be the one who creates the design.

You can of course be the one who designs the images you put on the t-shirts, but you don't absolutely need to.

Another great way to get money from t-shirt printing is by offering them to other businesses. You can brand t-shirts for other businesses or supply your t-shirts to audiences offering to help build their brand.

2. Candles

Candles are a great way to create something unique and also not be the most creative. Candles have a bunch of different niches that you can cater too. There are niches that include religious, birthday, creative, scented, and beeswax.

Scents that remind people of their childhood or scents that are unique to your zodiac sign. There are plenty of ways to get creative with candles.

In the same way as t-shirts you can supply them at other stores. You can offer them to other boutiques and/or sell them on Etsy.

3. Bath bombs & Soaps

Bath bombs and soaps have tons of searches every year. Bath bombs and speciality soaps are all the rage. They aren't super complicated but they are a little harder than soap. You have to learn the ins and outs of the formulas and chemicals.

But... if you can figure out bath bombs, most boutiques will put them on their site and people love them. They are an easy product to get out there. They are easy to brand. & you can add fun toys to the middle of them.

Soap also is more complicated than candles because you need to learn the formulas and how chemicals work but it is easier than bath bombs.

Getting help from a brand designer is important for bath bombs, soap, and salts, because it is a great product that can take off if gotten in front of the correct eyes.

Do your research and see if bath bombs are something you are interested in. They have to be kept fresh because the products fizz more, but starting a small business around soaps and salts and bath bombs is a great business that can take off and make real money with the correct amount of work put in.

4. Jewelry

Jewelry has a ton of diversity. You can make jewelry out of clay or metal. Earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets to name a few.

When starting a jewelry business you will want to do research to find out what is trending in the fashion community. Jewelry is so diverse and so you can really stand out if you can find a creative niche to fill.

Photography is an important aspect of selling jewelry, so make sure you are prepared on that front as well.

When creating jewelry you can have simple jewelry or you can have much more complex jewelry. There are a ton of people who are creating jewelry so it is a saturated market. But with the right hard worker and time put into it you can also become successful with jewelry.

5. Baked goods & Sweets

Baked goods and sweets is for the baker. If you don't know how to bake or haven't had much practice I would probably steer clear of this one. But if you do know how to bake then this is a fantastic business idea for you!

If you do want to learn you can look at your local college or community to take classes and learn how to.

You can bake cookies or cupcakes. You can do macaroons or cakes. There are so many options at all different price ranges!

Being able to bake puts you at a high advantage because there are so many places where sweets are wanted! Think about all the different parties people have and the different celebrations. This market is also saturated but there are so many parties ranging from all different price ranges that baked goods is a great business to start.

When you are beginning though getting good photographs of the goods you provide is important. The sweets side is important, but you need the business aspect for this one to take off. Make sure to check out my other blog posts talking about how to get your business off the ground!

6. Pottery & Clay objects

Pottery is a super technical skill and does require correct equipment. If you don't know this technique very well, like baking I would suggest going to a public college or look at your local community to take some classes on pottery.

However, you can make other things out of clay. You can do jewelry. You can make statues. You can make dishes that you paint. You can do planters or ornaments.

There are so many options when it comes to clay because you are creating something out of nothing.

Pottery does take a lot of supplies however, so make sure you are ready to invest in it.

7. Handmade Sewn Objects

Do you have a talent with a needle? There are tons of handmade goods that people love to buy. You could create knit dolls or needle point art. I've even seen people take pictures of loved ones and make them out of thread.

These are becoming more popular the past couple years, so creating anything out of thread and needles can be a great small business idea.

I have seen people create tassels for bags and keychains. I have also seen people take art work on a canvas and add a needle and thread to it. Get creative. Handmade sewing objects don't just have to be a dress or a skirt. You can get creative and small with them!

8. Sewing Projects

To go along with the Sewn Objects, for this business idea you can put together sewing projects. If you like needling or sewing small dolls, or knitting. You can put all the supplies together and sell those.

People love to get creative but sometimes it's difficult when you don't have all the correct supplies. Being able to give them all the supplies they need is a great market need to fill.

The craft stores have some of these but they are usually pretty tacky and there is for sure a niche that needs to be filled here.

9. Digital Art Prints

If you are an artist that paints or draws selling your art is a great way to make some extra cash, but in todays world it can get truly daunting. One great way to make money with your art is to upload it and make it digital.

Selling them online gets your art in front of tons of eyes. What I would do is create the digital print but then also sell the original.

You can also simply create online art. A trend I have seen recently is making people photos into digital art. They will take a picture such as a wedding photo and turn it into a digital art piece.

The digital world that we live in has so many options. Make sure you take advantage of it when it comes to your artwork.

10. Digital Products.

Along with digital art prints you can also offer digital products. There are so many companies that are looking for branding resources. If you can create things online then I would highly suggest this since it is a newer market.

From fonts to webinars to invitation templates, being able to create things digital may take time to learn but if you put in the effort and get the correct technology to do so you can easily find ways to make money this way.

The digital world and technology is constantly growing and when all your products are online you don't have to worry about shipping costs or inventory. The pros of a digital only product goes on and on.

Starting a small business is a great way to gain independence and to start making money from home. Working from home has some amazing perks but being your own boss is empowering and wonderful.

If you are thinking about starting your own business with one of these ideas make sure to do your own research. Being your own boss is so fun and I know you will love it too!
